BIG THANKS to Treobits for the recent mention on their front page!
Here's another promising program that seemed like it was going to be revolutionary. Or so we were led to believe. I remembered how PDA Performance was getting the huge buzz about this program in development that would knock your socks off. Well, we waited, for quite a long time and finally when something finally came out, we found out that it was LineUp that was released, which was mainly a widget app. The highly anticipated Saguaro was still in development. And, as we found out today, it has become vaporware. So, like many others, PDA Performance has also failed to execute. Which is a shame because there's nothing worse than anticipating something only to be sorely disappointed.
Sigh. Another sign that the Palm OS is seriously going downhill. Let's face it. It went downhill a long time ago but this recent news is another indication that developers who develop only for the Palm OS platform are going an uphill battle on a mountain that is sinking, unbeknownst to them. This is very sad news, as I am still a Palm OS fan, who, like many others, have migrated over to another platform. I still use my Palm OS Treo 650 daily but I also use my Windows Mobile Treo 750 as well. I think that as a Palm OS developer, they definitely need a strong customer base but they may need to consider developing for other platforms because, let's face it, developing mobile device programs isn't a high paying job.
Over at Palminfocenter, its article PDA Performance Announces Its Closure clearly says it well. " The ever-constricting Palm-conomy has just claimed another victim. PDAPerformance, developers of the "OS within an OS" Saguaro as well as the LineUp widget platform, has just announced their immediate closure. No specific reason other than unfortunate financial circumstances and the dire straits around the entire Palm OS ecosystem are given."
Also, Palmorama's Saguaro and LineUp are no more says "The forthcoming multi-tasking environment for PalmOS has been cancelled by PDA Performance citing the diminishing Palm economy as the main driver. It is a real shame and I think lots of people will be very disappointed as a result. However, it is perhaps the first writing on the wall that developers are leaving the palm economy for pastures new."
Things are probably going to look even uglier for the rest of 2008 and part of 2009, if and I mean a big IF the next generation Palm OS called Nova actually comes to light.
